Make your selections before the relevant kickoff. Some weeks include games at different times, so an early contest should not be left until the rest of the slate is about to begin.
Three questions worth asking before a pick
- What has changed since the last week? A season is a moving picture. Use recent play as context, but avoid treating one result as a complete answer.
- What kind of game is this? Rivalries, conference games, and games with postseason implications can carry a different kind of pressure than an ordinary matchup.
- Am I making this pick for a reason? An upset can be a perfectly sensible choice, but it should reflect a real read on the matchup—not just a desire to be different.
Use the standings as feedback, not a verdict
Standings make the challenge social, but they are also useful feedback. They show how your picks compared with the field and make it easier to see where a week went well or poorly. They cannot tell you whether a close decision was foolish; football will always preserve a little uncertainty.
The best part of a weekly format is that there is another chance ahead. A difficult Saturday is one page of the season, not the end of it.
